WAYS TO SUPPORT VETERANS

Genuine care and concern can be a lifeline.

You do not have to be a clinician to make a meaningful difference. Often, support begins with simple, human attention.

Strike up a conversation. Ask what branch they served in, what their role was, how their transition has been, or what kind of support feels helpful right now. Listen without rushing to fix, compare, or explain.

Small gestures matter: remembering someone’s name, inviting them to participate, checking in after an event, offering a ride, sharing a meal, or making sure they know they are welcome.

Learn the signs of distress and know what to do.

Oklahoma Veterans experience suicide rates nearly double the national average. Suicide prevention is a community responsibility, and learning the signs of mental distress can help you recognize when someone may need immediate support.

Warning signs may include withdrawal, hopelessness, increased substance use, giving away belongings, major mood changes, talking about being a burden, mentioning they are “so tired,” need a “reset button",” or expressing that they have no reason to live.

If you are concerned, ask directly and compassionately. Stay present. Help connect the person to immediate support.

If there is immediate danger, call 988 and press 1, or call 911.

Help build a community Veterans want to return to.

At SPARK!, we believe connection, creativity, purpose, and belonging are protective factors. Our programs are non-clinical, but they are part of a broader Veteran well-being and suicide prevention ecosystem.

You can help by showing up, listening deeply, supporting Veteran-led creative work, and helping build spaces where Veterans are known, welcomed, and valued.A great list of tips and resource can be found here: veteranscrisisline.net/signs-of-crisis
